In Brazil there is a nature reserve called Mata Escura.
It is quite large (about 500 square kilometers) and protects the rest of the Atlantic Forest of Minas Gerais.
The last golden-headed lion tamarins, golden-bellied capuchins and other rare animals live there.
Pumas also roam the landscape there.
The protected area is considered an IUCN protected area 1a and therefore one of the “strict” nature reserves.
And that is exactly where the municipality of Jequitinhonha is located.
Now another Solanum has been found there. It looks exactly like Solanum schizandrum - but has smaller fruits.
Tastes just like its big sister: kiwi passion fruit.
We ordered a few seeds - firstly out of curiosity about how this plant grows and secondly as a possible additional pollinator for our local Solanum schizandrum plants.
The plant grows half as a vine and half like a tree.
When it is young, it has jagged, thorny leaves that later become rounded again on the tree.
Very fast growing! The tree begins to bear fruit after about 2 years and then bears fruit for at least 6 years.
Please overwinter at at least 10 degrees.

Es ist ziemlich groß (ca. 500 Quadratkilometer) und schützt den Rest des Atlantischen Regenwaldes von Minas Gerais.
Dort leben die letzten Goldkopf Löwenäffchen, Goldbauch Kapuziner und weitere seltene Tiere.
Auch Pumas streifen dort durch die Landschaft.
Das Schutzgebiet gilt als IUCN Schutzgebiet 1a und damit zu den "strengen" Naturschutzgebieten.
Jetzt hat man dort eine weitere Solanum gefunden. Die sieht exakt wie die Solanum schizandrum aus - hat jedoch kleinere Früchte.
Geschmacklich genau wie die große Schwester: Kiwi-Maracuja.
Wir haben ein paar Samen bestellt - erstens aus Neugier wie diese Pflanze wächst und zweitens als eventuellen, zusätzlichen Bestäuber unserer hiesigen Solanum schizandrum Pflanzen.
Die Pflanze wächst halb rankend und halb wie ein Baum. Sie bekommt im jugendlichen Stadium gezackte, dornige Blätter die später am Baum wieder rundlich werden.
Sehr schnell wachsend!
Der Baum fängt nach ca. 2 Jahren an zu fruchten und trägt dann mindestens 6 Jahre lang.
Bitte bei mindestens 10 Grad überwintern.
